Inquiry into Digital ID Bill 2023 and Digital ID (Transition and Consequential Provisions) Bill 2023 
The Senate Economics Legislation Committee is seeking submissions from those interested in their inquiry into the Digital ID bills. We’re interested in hearing member feedback by 10 January to help inform our submission. Find out more about the bills and inquiry here.

New Commissioner of Taxation
Australian Treasurer, the Hon Dr Jim Chalmers MP, has announced the appointment of Rob Heferen as the next Commissioner of Taxation. The term of the current Commissioner, Chris Jordan AO, will conclude on 29 February 2024 after 10 years leading the ATO. Rob Heferen will begin his appointment on 1 March 2024. Read more.
Closing Loopholes Legislation Passed
There have been changes to the Fair Work Act following the passing of the ‘Closing Loopholes’ laws. While some changes took effect on 15 December, many of the changes will take effect across 2024 and into 2025. 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy Released
The Australian Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security Clare O’Neil MP released the 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy on 22 November. Here’s our key takeaways for DSPs:
  • Establishing a process for reviewing significant cyber incidents and feeding the lessons learned back into the business community and wider public
  • Exploring options to make it easier for businesses to meet their regulatory reporting obligations, including potential regulatory change or form simplification 
  • Co-designing a voluntary code of practice for app stores and app developers
  • Reviewing Commonwealth legislative data retention requirements focusing on non-personal data and whether existing provisions are appropriately balanced - following the review, the government will be exploring options to minimise and simplify data retention requirements.
ATO Annual Closure
The ATO’s annual December closure will be taking place from midday Friday 22 December 2023 to Tuesday 2 January 2024. During this time, their support services will close but the SBR service desk will be available for critical technical support, excluding public holidays. 


ASD Cyber Threat Report 2022-2023
The Australian Signals Directorate has released their Annual Cyber Threat Report 2022-23. This report provides a review of cyber incidents, reports and responses throughout the past year and an overview of the current threat landscape. Read more.


Join the Superannuation Ecosystem Incident Response Exercise
DSPANZ members are invited to register your interest in the GNGB’s upcoming Superannuation Ecosystem Incident Response Exercise scheduled for April 23 2024. The GNGB is looking to capture diverse participation from across the ecosystem. The deadline for submissions is January 15. Members can find more information on the Forum here.
